Introduction The Certification Circle Skill Sets
over a comprehensive coverage of all skills required to pass the
MOS Core and Expert certification exams. In fact, as the preface
to the textbook points out, the Table of Contents in the book maps
directly to the MOS exam objectives for
Core level and
Expert level in a one-to-one correlation. The Target
Your Skills sections, which end each of the Skill
Set chapters, offers a problem-solving approach to the
requisite skills in a manner similar to the actual MOS
certification exams themselves. Demonstrations of all skills are
offered in the TOM software, available on your SAM XP
CD or online via the Thomson server after you install the CD on
your computer. Sample tests for each Skill Set are offered
in the SAM software online via the Thomson server after you
install the CD. You will have the opportunity to take each test
multiple times to measure your progress and target your needs. If
you follow this plan meticulously, you will be able to pass the
Core and Expert level MOS Word 2002 certification exams.

Explanations and Comments
- Work through all Skill Set chapters in the
Certification Circle textbook.
Each Skill Set chapter in the textbook (Getting
Started, and Skill Sets
1-13) contains a number of presentations on the Word
2002
skills, which you must master before taking the certification
exams. The skills are covered in the same order as the MOS
certification exams. Skill Sets 1-6 cover skills that are
represented on the MOS Core Level exam for Word 2002. Skill Sets
7-13 cover skills that are represented on the MOS Expert Level
exam for Word 2002. The presentation of each skill offers a brief
introduction (usually one or two paragraphs), important Tips,
and a series of Activity Steps. The Activity Steps require the use of data files that were downloaded from
the Thomson Learning website and are now posted in the Handouts
section of the web portal. (You should immediately download the
data files to your PC if you haven't already done so). Detailed
instructions in the textbook guide you in the process of carrying out the skill
Activity Steps, and screen shots of completed steps are
presented in the figures that accompany the steps.
After you have worked through all of the Skill Sets, you
should answer the questions and/or do the exercises that are in
the Target Your Skills section at the end of each
Skill Set. If you know the answers to the questions and/or
can do the exercises without difficulty, you are ready to move
on to the next Skill Set. If not, you should review the
issues presented in the Skill Set chapter before moving
on. Since the skills are presented in sequence of increasing
difficulty, you should only move on to a new Skill Set if
you have mastered the Skills Sets before it.
- Work through all Core and Expert Level Projects
in the Word 2002 Core Projects Appendix (pp. 305-319)
and the Word 2002 Expert Projects Appendix (pp. 321-335).
It is a good idea to practice all Word skills
conscientiously before sitting for the MOS certification exams. The
Projects in the Word 2002 Projects Appendices (pp. 305-335) provide an added layer of
practice to the Activity Steps in the Skill Set chapters.
You should do each Project after completing its
corresponding Skill Set chapter. The necessary data files
are included among the data files in the Handouts section of the
web portal. There is no Project for the chapter entitled
Getting Started with MS Word 2002.
- Post any questions you have on the Web Portal
discussion forum; and/or, email your questions to the
course instructor.
A discussion forum has been created in the Forums
section of the web portal discussion on the Certification
Circle Skill Sets. Post any and all questions there, so that
your classmates can benefit from the questions and answers. You
may also email the course instructor by means of the email link
above. All emails will be monitored by the course instructor and
by supervising professors at the Mount.
